Bringing Mr. Ortega his night pills, she heard him arguing with Madame Catherine in the study about the will, followed by a heavy sound. Catherine emerged looking anxious, took the sleeping pills from her, and Mary glimpsed Mr. Ortega face down and motionless on his desk. Mary tells a stunned Gabriel she believes his stepmother may have killed his father.
